Our Vocation

Spiritan Rule of Life (SRL), 2

In the midst of God’s people, the Holy Spirit inspires many calls and many ministries. Among these, the Spiritans Sons of the Holy Spirit are uniquely called by the Father and “set apart” (Acts 13:2) to follow Jesus and announce the Good News of the Kingdom. In Tanzania and across East Africa, this vocation is lived concretely in parish ministry, education, health care, social outreach, and a preferential love for the poor and marginalized. Rooted in prayer, community life, and missionary availability, Spiritan service in the region draws strength from the Rule of Life and from a growing local Church that continues to answer the Spirit’s call.

We are priests and brothers committed to living the Gospel in close partnership with the people we serve. Our daily life centers on prayer and the sacraments, and our communities witness to fraternity, simplicity, and mutual support. This spiritual foundation shapes all our ministries: we follow Jesus closely in pastoral care, we announce the Kingdom through word and action, and we stand in solidarity with those whose dignity and basic needs are threatened. The Spiritan presence in Tanzania and East Africa increasingly reflects local vocations and leadership, strengthening our capacity to respond sensitively to cultural realities and pastoral needs.

Our work in the region focuses on several interrelated areas. In parish ministry we aim to nurture vibrant faith communities where catechesis, youth formation, family support, and lay leadership flourish. In education and formation we run and support schools, vocational centres, and formation programs that empower children, youth, and adults with knowledge, skills, and Christian values. In health and social services, we offer clinics, health education, and programs addressing maternal and child health, HIV/AIDS, and mental well-being. Through development projects in agriculture, water, and microfinance we promote sustainable livelihoods, while advocacy and peacebuilding efforts pursue justice, human dignity, and the common good.

Collaboration is essential to our approach. We work closely with local dioceses, religious congregations, lay partners, and civic organizations so that ministries are effective, accountable, and rooted in community needs. Intercultural and interreligious engagement is part of our commitment: we build respectful relationships across differences and seek cooperative responses to shared challenges. Lay collaborators teachers, health workers, catechists, and volunteers are integral to mission, and we welcome partnerships that multiply the impact of our service.

We invite the people of Tanzania and East Africa to join us in this vocation through prayer, partnership, and discernment. Spiritual support and prayer sustain our communities; volunteers and professional collaborators strengthen our ministries; and financial contributions enable vital programs that transform lives. For those discerning a deeper call, the Spiritan family offers formation and guidance for priestly, brotherly, or lay missionary commitment. Together we seek to bring the compassion of Christ to those most in need, faithful to the Spirit’s promptings.

May our work continue to be guided by the Holy Spirit: setting us apart for mission, molding us in simplicity and service, and sending us to proclaim the Good News of the Kingdom.
