Spiritan Lay Associates
The Spiritan Lay Associates in the Province of Tanzania have continued to grow steadily over the years, becoming an important part of the Spiritan family and mission. Inspired by the spirituality and charism of the Congregation of the Holy Spirit (Spiritans), they share in the missionary vision of the Church while living out their Christian vocation within their families, workplaces, and communities.
To guide their spiritual journey and mission, the Lay Associate Spiritans have developed the Lay Associate Spiritan Way of Life, adapted from the Spiritan Rule of Life. This guide provides direction in areas such as spirituality, mission, community life, formation, and prayer, helping members to deepen their commitment to Christ and to the Spiritan charism.
At the heart of the Lay Associate Spiritan vocation is the recognition that all Christians, through Baptism, are called to holiness and mission. Lay Associates strive to build the Kingdom of God by witnessing to the Gospel in their daily lives and by serving others with faith, compassion, and integrity. In communion with the Spiritan Congregation, they participate in the mission of evangelization, especially among the poor, the marginalized, and those most in need.
In Tanzania, Spiritan Lay Associates actively collaborate with Spiritan priests and religious in various pastoral and social ministries. Their involvement includes catechesis, youth ministry, support for vulnerable children and families, charitable outreach, education, Small Christian Communities, and initiatives promoting justice, peace, and the integrity of creation. In some areas, they also assist in vocation promotion, parish activities, missionary animation, and accompaniment of people facing social and spiritual challenges.
The Lay Associate Spiritans meet regularly for prayer, faith sharing, ongoing formation, and mutual support. These gatherings strengthen fraternity and deepen their understanding of the Spiritan spirituality and mission. Inspired by the first Christian communities, they seek to live in unity, reflecting the spirit described in the Acts of the Apostles, where believers “remained faithful to the teaching of the apostles, to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to the prayers” (Acts 2:42), and where the community was “one heart and soul” (Acts 4:32).
Prayer remains at the center of the Spiritan Lay Associate Way of Life. Through personal and communal prayer, reflection on the Word of God, participation in the Eucharist, and openness to the Holy Spirit, Lay Associates seek to grow in union with God and in service to others. Their spirituality calls them to become witnesses of hope, reconciliation, and Christian charity within society.
The growth of the Spiritan Lay Associates in Tanzania is a sign of the increasing collaboration between laity and religious in the mission of the Church. Together with Spiritan priests and brothers, they continue to witness to the Gospel through faith, service, solidarity, and missionary commitment.
