our Parishes
Spartan Parishes
Ministries beyond parishes: The parishes we run, tend to perform well,
thanks to the creativity and dedication of our confreres. It is not difficult to
predict our future in these parishes. If we are aware of the contingent
nature of our presence in parish ministry, then we should begin to value
projects that align well with our charism. Why do many of us lack the same
creativity, imagination and spirit of sacrifice when it comes to our own
projects? It appears that many confreres lack the confidence to work
outside parish contexts, not just because of clericalism, but also because
some of our works/projects aren’t “lucrative” enough. This kind of mindset
makes it difficult for the administration when assigning confreres.
4. Elderly and the sick: There is a saying in West Africa which goes, “It’s a
blessing to have at least one old man in the village.” We are blessed to have
senior confreres among us whom we care with gratitude for many years of
service in the Congregation. We also attend with charity and fraternal care
those among us who are sick. If we look at the evolution of our demography,
we have to be proactive in seeking the solution now. There are two
unavoidable questions: space and funds. What are the possible alternatives
which don’t compromise the dignity of our senior and sick confreres?
5. Lack of administrative culture: Initiative is an important and appreciated
quality among confreres and contributes positively to our common mission.
In administrative matters, however, such initiatives are best undertaken
within the appropriate limits of competence and in consultation with the
relevant structures. There have been instances in which the provincial
administration has been asked by bishops to endorse decisions that were
taken by confreres without its prior involvement. Situations such as these
can unintentionally create confusion regarding roles and responsibilities
within the Province. When the administration subsequently emphasizes
established procedures, this may be perceived by some confreres as
restricting initiative, whereas the intention is to promote transparency,
coordination, and good administrative practice according to SRL and
General Chapters decisions.
